Yarrow Mamout (1736-1823)

Picture 1 of 13

Mamout was a well educated Muslim who was captured into slavery at the age of 16. He was a slave of Upton Beall in Montgomery County until he was freed at the age of 60. Mamout then bought a property in Georgetown which is the only property in the United States known to be owned by a former slave who was brought from Africa. This portrait was painted by Charles Willson Peale. For more information about Yarrow Mamout check out James Johnston's book "From Slave Ship to Harvard".
