Beware the carpet beetle! We recently discovered, much to our horror, we have them in our storage. They thrive in dark undisturbed boxes. Textiles, carpets, fur, and feathers are their favorite foods.

To eliminate these pests we are setting up a temporary textile lab in the Beall-Dawson Museum. Commercial chemicals used by exterminators are not appropriate for museum use. However, freezing the textiles is an effective and non-damaging method for eliminating these pests. The process takes about a week for each box of textiles. Curator Liz Lay will be working in the lab and will be providing a behind-the-scenes look at textile conservation.

You are invited to join Liz as she processes each weeks’ textile rotation. You will get a chance to see textiles that have never been on display, including wedding gowns, 19th century dresses, military uniforms, and embroidered household linens.
