Textile Lab Every Thursday, Beginning April 28, 2016! Conservation in Action!

Beware the carpet beetle! We recently discovered, much to our horror, we have them in our storage. They thrive in dark undisturbed boxes. Textiles, carpets, fur, and feathers are their favorite foods.

To eliminate these pests we are setting up a temporary textile lab in the Beall-Dawson Museum. Commercial chemicals used by exterminators are not appropriate for museum use. However, freezing the textiles is an effective and non-damaging method for eliminating these pests. The process takes about a week for each box of textiles. Curator Liz Lay will be working in the lab every Thursday afternoon, 12:00 – 4:00 p.m., over the next several months, and beginning on April 28, 2016 will be providing a behind-the-scenes look at textile conservation.

You are invited to join Liz as she processes each weeks’ textile rotation. You will get a chance to see textiles that have never been on display, including wedding gowns, 19th century dresses, military uniforms, and embroidered household linens. For more information, email Liz at ELay@MontgomeryHistory.org.
