Send for the Doctor: The Life and Times of Dr. Edward E. Stonestreet, 19th Century Physician and Civil War SurgeonBy Clarence R. HickeyUnderstanding the history of our community, and our shared heritage, helps us to understand a bit of ourselves. It also accents the question: "How will we be remembered, as individuals and as a community?" Dr. Edward Elisha Stonestreet (1830-1903) had a distinguished career as a community and family physician for over half a century, from 1852 until his death in 1903. Educated at the University of Maryland, Dr. Stonestreet established a successful practice in Rockville where his career bore witness to much advancement in the fields of science and medicine during the second half of the 19th century. Esteemed as a public servant and humanitarian, Dr. Stonestreet served two terms as Contract Surgeon for the Union Army during the Civil War, helped to found the Montgomery County Medical Society, and was the first Public Health Officer in the county. But perhaps most notable is the fact that throughout his career, Dr. Stonestreet helped anyone who needed his care - regardless of who they were or how they could pay. Through documents, photographs and other primary sources this book examines the life and career of this prominent local physician in the context of the 19th century world in which he lived. Here is an informative and educational portrayal of Dr. Stonestreet as a student, citizen, family man, physician and Civil War surgeon - a portrait of a remarkable man who cared for, and took care of, his community. $18.00 (retail) 40% discount to resellers ordering 10 or more copies Montgomery County Historical Society Museum Shop |
