The Carderock Division of the Naval Surface Warfare Center has a rich history, dating back to its inception in 1939. It was established to replace the Experimental Model Basin, which was one of the largest and finest model basins for testing models of ship designs being developed of its time. The division has since grown to become the Navy’s center of excellence for ships and ship systems, with a focus on improving the performance of ships, submarines, military watercraft, and unmanned vehicles. It has a distinguished reputation as the birthplace of superior naval technology and continues to be a major component and field activity of the Naval Sea Systems Command.
